About Beth

About Beth's work
Beth’s pieces are inspired by the spirit of nature and the stories within landscapes. Her pieces are based on real places and experiences that evoke those moments of connection between our ancestral souls and the elemental spirits of nature - a certain sensation she feels when experiencing the wonder of the natural world!
Using the medium of printmaking, Beth endeavours to capture this sense of wonderment in art by creating work with depth and atmosphere and developing techniques to capture light, distance and detail to reflect the mystical feel of those experiences.
She specialises in highly detailed multi layered lino cuts, sometimes combining this with hand colouring using water colours and more recently introducing mono printing techniques and collage to her creative practice.
Beth aims to develop a distinct style of printmaking through her growing understanding of its
capabilities - pushing the boundaries of what is expected from printmaking to produce work that evokes and captures our emotional connection
with nature and our landscape.

What is a lino cut?

‘Lino cut printing’ is a printmaking method where a design is carved into a block of ‘linoleum’ - a hard linseed based material, just like the lino once used for flooring!
The lino is carved using specialist carving tools and the design is created by carefully carving out areas to leave a raised surface. The raised surface left behind is then rolled with a layer of ink, paper is laid over the top and pressure is applied using a press or by hand to transfer the ink to the paper. This creates a printed image from the carved surface of the lino.
Multiple colours are created by printing different colour layers or hand colouring with water colours. Beth also prints using the monotype method of inking up a plate of Perspex and wiping and drawing in to the ink to create an image to print.
